International honor recognizes Professor Claire Garandeau’s work
Professor Claire Garandeau has been awarded the distinction of ISSBD Fellow, by the International Society for the Study of Behavioral Development, in recognition of her outstanding contributions as a senior scholar to the field of lifespan human development. Her work has significantly advanced our understanding of why some classrooms are more vulnerable to the emergence and persistence of bullying than others.
Professor Claire Garandeau’s research on school bullying and anti-bullying interventions has significantly advanced our understanding of why bullying is more likely to emerge and persist in some classrooms and how schools and teachers can respond more effectively. Using data from the Finnish KiVa Antibullying program, she has identified the strategies that are most effective when teachers intervene in individual bullying cases and the students who benefit most from these interventions. Her work has also demonstrated that the classroom social environment is a key target for prevention by showing how classroom status hierarchies promote bullying and how classroom norms influence victims’ adjustment.
Since 2022, Garandeau has served as Associate Editor of the society’s flagship journal, the International Journal of Behavioral Development. She has published over 60 scholarly articles and book chapters on school bullying.
Founded in 1969, the International Society for the Study of Behavioural Development (ISSBD) is a global scientific society dedicated to advancing research on human development across the lifespan. With thousands of members in more than 70 countries, ISSBD brings together researchers from diverse disciplines and methodological traditions who share an interest in understanding human development and promoting its application in research, policy, and practice. Every two years, ISSBD recognizes a number of researchers as fellows for their sustained impact on the developmental science community.
