Towards the Next Welfare State

The Nordic Welfare State is an exceptional success story in guaranteeing social welfare and equality as well as tranquility to the people. However, today the Nordic countries, including Finland, are facing the demographic, economic and social limits of maintaining such a model. What could be Finland’s Welfare Model 2.0 – a model that is based on social investments and innovative interventions.

Towards the Next Welfare State event was organised 4th of October in Helsinki, and it was an official side event to the Finnish EU presidency 2019 programme.

Director General Veli-Mikko Niemi, International Affairs, Finnish Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, opened the seminar. He said that the Human wellbeing and economic growth are closely intertwined and mutually reinforcing – Wellbeing of people creates economic growth, economic growth creates possibilities to improve the wellbeing of people.

Head of Department Seppo Määttä from the Prime Minister’s Office stated that ambition and ability to deliver and work together within the government offices is the key in solving the important phenomena such as building a fair, equal and inclusive Finland.

INVEST PIs presented INVEST aims and goals, and the background to the project, to the participants.
