Finnish school was a big motivation to return to Finland
Satu Helske, Senior Researcher
Before Turku, I was living in Oxford, UK and in Norrköping, Sweden. A big incentive for moving back to Finland was the great Finnish comprehensive school. The bilingual city of Turku offers education in Finnish and Swedish, as well as an international school, some bilingual classes, and additional lessons in one’s own native language, which are offered in almost 30 languages.
My child has greatly enjoyed attending the neighbourhood elementary school. In addition to her normal classes she receives so-called immigrant native language lessons, which help to maintain and develop the language skills she learned when living abroad.
Turku is big enough for offering a good selection of activities and hobbies and small enough for everything being easily accessible by foot, bike, or public transport. A great place for raising happy children!
