The project Family Formation in Flux – Causes, Consequences, and Possible Futures (FLUX) starts and recruits postdocs

The research project Family Formation in Flux – Causes, Consequences, and Possible Futures (FLUX), led by Marika Jalovaara and Mikko Myrskylä, was granted 3.8 million euros by the Strategic Research Council in Finland. Now the consortium is looking for talented and ambitious postdocs specialised in demography, sociology and economics.

The Strategic Research Council (SRC), established within the Academy of Finland, funds research projects that seek concrete solutions to grand challenges that require multidisciplinary approaches.

SRC recently selected new consortia for funding. The consortium Family Formation in Flux – Causes, Consequences, and Possible Futures (FLUX), led by Marika Jalovaara from the University of Turku and Mikko Myrskylä from the University of Helsinki and the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research, was granted 3.8 million euros for the first 3-year funding period of the 6-year project.

At the moment, three of the consortium’s sub-projects are recruiting. They all seek talented and ambitious postdocs specialised in demography, sociology and economics. All recruited postdocs will analyse register data.

– “These positions offer chances to work with other inspired researchers, and to gain experience in register-based research. In this strategic research project, we perform cross-cutting research that is also societally relevant, and communicating the knowledge to policy actors and other stakeholders is central”, summarises Marika Jalovaara, PI and Consortium Director of FLUX.

-“Beyond offering challenging work and opportunities to learn, we facilitate postdocs’ careers also in other ways. Postdocs can allocate time on their own projects linked to FLUX research. We facilitate seeking funding for their own projects. After all, getting one’s own funding is an important merit and a step towards independence as a researcher.”

The multidisciplinary FLUX consortium seeks evidence-based solutions for influencing and adapting to changes in fertility dynamics that accelerate population ageing. FLUX focuses on the changing fertility and family dynamics in the Nordic countries and in Finland in particular, and provides insights into

  • the underlying causes of the changes,
  • the effects these changes have on individuals and society,
  • the linkages of the dynamics with social and gender inequalities and psychosocial and economic well-being,
  • how social and family policies at both the state and local government levels can tackle the challenges created by the low-fertility landscape.

FLUX brings together leading researchers from demography and other key disciplines relevant to understanding the causes and consequences of changing fertility and family dynamics.

The links to each recruitment calls:

University of Turku (Marika Jalovaara) – demography, sociology
Åbo Akademi University (Eva Österbacka) – economics
University of Helsinki (Mikko Myrskylä) – demography, sociology, data science
