Welcome to the INVEST Research Flagship Centre as an applicant for the Research Council of Finland’s funding!
INVEST – Inequalities, Interventions, and New Welfare State, is a Research Flagship of the Research Council of Finland. INVEST aims at providing a new model for the welfare states that is more equal, better targeted to problem groups, more anticipatory as well as economically and socially sustainable. Based on cutting-edge research on the conditions and mechanisms involved at different periods of development, INVEST will evaluate and develop various universal and targeted interventions to improve the efficiency of the current welfare state institutions at critical points of the early life course.
The INVEST Research Flagship Centre operates under the Faculties of Medicine and Social Sciences at the University of Turku and at the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL). The University of Turku is the second largest multidisciplinary university in Finland and offers an excellent environment for international research. In the international QS ranking, the University of Turku is among the top 300 universities. THL studies, monitors, and develops measures to promote the well-being and health of the population in Finland. THL also gathers and produces information based on research and register data, and provides expertise and solutions to support decision-making.

The Finnish Flagship Programme provides a new, unique way of doing R&D&I in Finland. Substantial, long-term funding is granted for six Flagships, each operating in their specific field. The Finnish Flagships are attractive, large ecosystems and hubs for excellent people with high ambitions. They represent high-quality research and proven societal impact, peer-reviewed by an international panel of experts and selected by the Research Council of Finland.
How to apply for funding to the INVEST Research Flagship?
When you are applying Research Council’s funding, please contact first the director of the INVEST Research Flagship Centre, Jani Erola, or the principal investigator of the INVEST research team (sociology, psychology, child psychiatry or social policy) you are planning to do your research and apply to. Send a short introduction about you and your research, and explain your reasons for applying to the INVEST team in question. The director of the INVEST Flagship will be the person giving the commitment of the site of research in the Research Council’s electronic submission system.
As an Research Council’s applicant of the INVEST Research Flagship Centre, our principal investigators will review your research funding application. By peer-review, INVEST provides valuable peer support and feedback for the research funding applicants. INVEST also welcomes you for a visit to our seminars where you can present your research ideas and design and get comments from other INVEST researchers as well. Also the specialists in e.g. Research Funding, Finance and Library Services and Open Science will help you.
