”Suicide runs in families. Vulnerability to suicidal behaviors, including suicide deaths and suicide attempts, is transmitted from parents to offspring, above and beyond parents’ and offspring’s psychopathology. Despite its high relevance for preventive and intervention efforts, the impact of having a parent who has attempted suicide on offspring’s mental health and suicide risk has many unexplored areas, including the role of timing of the parental suicide attempts on offspring risk for attempting suicide or dying by suicide, and the potential pathways that may carry this risk from one generation to the next. My presentation will cover different studies specifically designed to address these gaps in the literature using register and survey data”, Peralta says.

Ana Ortin Peralta is an Assistant Professor at the School-Clinical Child Psychology Program, Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology, Yeshiva University, and a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Psychiatry Research Institute at Montefiore/Einstein (PRIME). She is the director of the Youth Suicide Lad at Ferkauf and a member of PRIME Center of Health Equity.

Her research program uses a mixed methods approach to examine how developmental, cultural, and contextual factors interact to increase suicide risk among children and adolescents from diverse backgrounds. Her research also focuses on identifying psychological pathways undelaying the intergenerational transmission of suicide risk. Dr. Ortin Peralta completed her training as a clinical psychologist at the Hospital Vall d’Hebron in Barcelona, Spain.
